Hoodoo is primarily a form of African-American folk magic. While it is also known as conjure, it developed as a result of the synthesis of a multitude of various magical practices from different cultures. Hoodoo blends much of itself from an assortment of African and Native American magical practices, in addition to deriving some content from certain European forms of magic and grimoires. Even though hoodoo is a transmogrification of magical folk practices from different cultures, an innovation that sets apart this magical practice is the abundant use of biblical figures in the rituals, as well as in the homes of the practitioners.
The word “Hoodoo” itself was first documented in American English in the year 1875 and was listed either as a noun or a transitive verb.
